A good example of a drug with potential side effects is Abilify.
Abilify – Its Intended Use
According to the manufacturer, this drug is intended for several uses:
Use as an add-on treatment for adults with depression when an antidepressant alone is not enough
Treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults and in pediatric patients 10 to 17 years of age
Treatment of schizophrenia in adults and in adolescents 13 to 17 years of age
Treatment of irritability associated with autistic disorder in pediatric patients 6 to 17 years of age.
No question that these are serious disorders and need treatment. Perhaps Abilify is THE best choice for patients who have these disorders. However, one must consider the side effects.
The Side Effects (Adverse Drug Reactions)
Fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats;
Jerky muscle movements you cannot control;
Sudden numbness or weakness, headache, confusion, or problems with vision, speech, or balance;
Fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, sores in your mouth and throat;
Increased thirst or urination, loss of appetite, fruity breath odor, drowsiness, dry skin, nausea, and vomiting;
Thoughts of hurting yourself;
Feeling like you might pass out;
Jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes); or
Urinating less than usual or not at all.
Abilify – The Ridiculous Directions: (according to rxlist)
“Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.”
“Stop using aripiprazole (Abilify) and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as: (the ones listed above)”
The issue here is not how effective this drug is. The issue has nothing to do with the side effects, even though many are severe. It has everything to do with “Take This Drug And Let’s See If You Have A Reaction!”
Does that make sense to you? Should you take a drug knowing there is the possibility of one or more of those severe side effects? Doesn’t that make you somewhat of a guinea pig or lab experiment? Again, this has nothing to do with the efficacy of a drug that was approved by the FDA. It has everything to do with giving you a drug and guessing at the outcome AFTER you take it.
Abilify – A Better Way To Prescribe This Drug
What if you knew before you take the pill, that you would have a side effect? Perhaps it would be one so severe that you would end up in the hospital? Would you still take the pill? Probably not!
Well, there is such a test and its professional name is Pharmacogenetics. Simply put, it’s a DNA test that will tell your healthcare professional if you will have any reaction to taking the drug. Whether it’s Abilify or one of thousands of other drugs, get tested BEFORE taking the drug. Get the right drug, the right dose, the first time!
